National Route 270 of the National Cycle Network connects Tavistock and Bere Alston via the northern part of Tavistock following the course of the old railway line. It also forms an alternative loop off Route 27 (Devon Coast to Coast) through Tavistock.

Coming from the northeast on Route 27 into Tavistock, National Route 270 is a turn-off onto the old railway path.

Following a short section on road, the route becomes traffic-free for a continuous stretch through Tavistock to Crease Lane where it returns to the road to rejoin National Route 27. It is at this point that it is proposed to continue on the disused railway as far as Bere Alston.
