National Route 18 of the National Cycle Network runs west from Canterbury, via Ashford and Tenterden, to Royal Tunbridge Wells. It will eventually continue westwards to join with National Route 21 near Eridge.
The route is open and signed from Canterbury to Royal Tunbridge Wells. There is a gap between Mystole and the A28 near Godmersham, and near Dingleden.
The 42-mile section between Ashford and Tunbridge Wells is very popular. A largely on-road ride using country lanes, it travels through the High Weald, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It really showcases Kent's scenery, complete with picture-postcard villages, such as Chilmington Green and Matfield.
A word of warning to those under the impression that Kent is flat - this undulating journey will be a challenge for novice riders. For families and those wanting a gentler experience we would recommend the traffic-free areas at Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest and the Ashford Green Corridor. A 12-mile mountain bike circuit is available at nearby Bewl Water for those who want to test their mettle.
