FAQs - Sharing the Network

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about sharing the National Cycle Network with other users.

Can you do anything about cyclists who travel in a fast and dangerous way?

As an independent charity, Sustrans does not have the power to enforce or regulate path users behaviour.

Where possible, we promote considerate use of our paths and feature advice on how to use shared paths across our publications and on our website.

Can you do anything about dogs being let off leads?

As an independent charity, Sustrans does not have the power to enforce or regulate path users behaviour. We ask path users to keep their dogs under reasonable control and to pick up after their dog.

Where can I put my rubbish?

Sustrans do not provide bins because we do not have the capacity to empty them. However, some arrangements may exist with local authorities either on the path or at path entrances. If no bins are provided, we kindly ask you to dispose of your litter or dog waste at home.

Are horses allowed on the Network?

Horses are allowed on many of our traffic-free routes, but where they aren't it might be at the request of the relevant landowner.

We work hard with partners such as the British Horse Society in our role as custodian of the Network and proactively consider how to include horse riders along new and improved sections of the Network.

Read more about our work with the British Horse Society.

Are motor vehicles allowed on the Network?

Motor vehicles are not allowed on the traffic-free sections of the Network. Please report any sightings of motor vehicles on traffic-free paths to the police.

Are e-scooters allowed on the Network?

Sustrans’ position is that no e-scooters are currently permitted on traffic-free National Cycle Network routes that Sustrans owns or manages without express permission on a case-by-case basis. This applies to both privately-owned and hired e-scooters.

The use of e-scooters on traffic-free National Cycle Network that is not owned or managed by Sustrans is at the discretion of individual landowners, although we would welcome being consulted.
