Our work with schools in Wales

We work with schools across Wales to create a culture that makes it easier for children to walk, wheel, scoot and cycle.

Our work with schools in Wales is designed to boost physical activity, reduce congestion, and enhance safety around schools.

Active travel to school leads to improved behaviour, higher concentration levels and overall wellbeing of pupils.

Our experience builds on the work we deliver with around 1,000 schools and 160,000 pupils across Wales and the UK yearly.

Our dedicated school officers collaborate closely with teachers, students, and parents, fostering a culture of active travel from within.

Let us kickstart active travel at your school, creating a community-wide culture of well-being and safety.

Join us on the journey to transform your school's travel landscape.

Building skills

Our Active Journeys programme works with schools across Wales to create a culture that makes it easier for children to walk, wheel, scoot, or cycle.

The programme offers a range of support and guidance to schools including behaviour change activities, cycle and scooter skills training, lessons focused on active travel, incentives for the school community that promote cycling, walking and scooting and much more.

Rewarding and celebrating

The Sustrans Active Travel School Award celebrates and recognises schools in Wales that actively promote walking, wheeling, cycling, and scooting.

Sign your school up today and work towards a Bronze, Silver, or Gold accreditation by fostering positive changes towards a more active and sustainable future for your school and community.

Creating safe routes to school

Our School Streets programme tackles the congestion, poor air quality and road safety concerns that many schools experience.

We do this by restricting motor traffic at the school gates for a short period of time, generally at drop-off and pick-up times.

Find out how we can support your school or local authority to trial and implement a School Street in your area.

Activating your school community

Kickstart active travel at your school and encourage a healthy school run for all students with one of our national events and competitions for schools.

Sign your school up for the Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel, the UK’s largest walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling challenge.

You can also get your school active with the annual Cycle to School Week.
