This route is also known as the 'Ystwyth Trail' and officially starts at the car park next to the football ground; however, it is easy to access from anywhere in Aberystwyth. The route goes across the footbridge over the river Rheidol, then through some houses before crossing the busy A487.
The route then rises up a short sharp incline to the top of Felin Y Mor from where there are good views of the coastline. Following the course of the old railway line for about 2 miles to Llanfarian the path is gentle with the River Ystwyth is on the right-hand side.
From here the route heads into woodland, and there is a small picnic area here with bench and signs for walking trails through the woods. The route undulates for a short distance before crossing a bridge over the Ystwyth and rejoining the route of the old railway for another 2 miles into Llanilar.
There are shops in both Llanfairan and Llanilar, where there is also a small pub.
The route can be extended further along the Ystwyth trail. See the Llanilar to Abermagor and Cors Caron Nature Reserve sections.
