South Downs Way

The South Downs Way is a mainly off-road, mountain bike route which traces a route through the rolling hills of Sussex and Hampshire. As you bike from Eastbourne to Winchester you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.

This mainly off-road, mountain bike route follows the escarpments and ridges of the South Downs.

It goes through Sussex and Hampshire, with some breathtaking views along the way.

The South Downs Way follows the ancient chalk ridge of the South Downs from Eastbourne to Winchester.

And the elevated position makes for some stunning views over the Weald to the north and the English Channel to the south.
  

Things to see along the route

On the way, you can explore ancient monuments, nature reserves and Sites of Special Scientific Interest, as well as picturesque towns and villages.

Cyclists can follow the blue, plum and red arrows along the trail.

Along the route, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the Iron Age hill forts of Old Winchester Hill, Chanctonbury Ring and Devils Dyke.

You can also visit Beacon Hill nature reserve and the Seven Sisters country park near Eastbourne.
  

Route start and end points

This rugged off-road route begins in Eastbourne, a resort town on England’s southeast coast.

Before you set off you can stroll along the seafront and admire the town’s Victorian hotels and 19th-century pier.

At the other end of the route, on the edge of England's South Downs National Park, is the city of Winchester.

While in Winchester you can visit medieval Winchester Cathedral, which has a 17th-century library and a Norman crypt.

Nearby are the ruins of Wolvesey Castle and the Winchester City Mill, a working 18th-century corn mill.

The rolling hills of the South Downs offer you gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside as you bike through this lovely corner of southern England.
