We all know that as the nights start getting lighter and the temperature slightly higher, there is a natural pull to spend more time outdoors. While we’re hoping that the wintry weather is behind us, spring does still come with its share of heavy rain showers. We’ve shared some of our top tips to prepare for those, potential, spring-time showers.

Be prepared to keep yourself dry
Even if it’s not actively raining, the spray from the road can get your clothing wet while cycling.
A 100% waterproof jacket will keep your upper half dry from the rain and spray off the road and protect you from the wind while you’re cycling.
For longer rides, waterproof overshoes are a good investment to help to keep your feet warm and dry while pedalling away.
Waterproof gloves are also useful to keep your hands warm and dry. Hands are often the first thing to get cold and numb when cycling, yet one of the most important for braking and changing gears.

Check your tyres and chain
After a ride in the rain, it’s a good idea to check your tyres for grit and clean your chain.
If riding in cooler months, it’s a good idea to give your whole bike a clean with a bike brush. Early spring can still mean salty roads, and leaving salt on bikes can lead to corrosion on your components and frame – problems that are usually easier to prevent than treat.
Make sure you cover your chain in a degreaser and dry it thoroughly with a cloth. Then apply chain lube to protect it.

Illuminate your ride
With longer days and warmer weather, you’ll likely be dreaming of getting out on your bike for longer rides at the weekend and into the evenings.
In the UK we’re no strangers to poor light and visibility levels, even during the spring. Ensuring other road users can see you is important, especially if you’re caught in a heavy spring shower and visibility is decreased for everyone.
It’s always handy to keep a set of bike lights on your bike or in your bag, even if you think you won’t need them. This front cube light and rear cube light by Oxford are a great size.

Get reflective
