We’re offering free cycle maintenance, advice on route planning and cycle confidence sessions as part of our new scheme with Nottingham City Council to help more people walk, cycle or wheel to work.

We’re working with organisations throughout the Nottingham city area as part of the Sustainable Travel Support Programme to address barriers to walking, cycling and wheeling.
Free activities on offer at workplaces include ‘Bike Doctor’ sessions for bicycle servicing and minor repairs and a chance to learn how to maintain your own bike.
There are also cycle confidence sessions, led walks and rides, and cycle security events. Employees will have access to personal travel planning including detailed walking and cycling routes from home to work, maps and information,
Meets exercise guidelines and reduces sickness
Only 66% of men and 61% of women in England* say they meet the recommended amount of physical activity per week.
Walking, wheeling or cycling to work can help people to meet the current government recommendation for adults to do 150 minutes of moderate activity per week.
Travelling actively to work also decreases sickness absence in staff.
So promoting and supporting walking, wheeling and cycling is hugely beneficial for businesses and workplaces too.
And we know from our research that people are keen to get more active on their journeys. Sustrans’ Walking and Cycling Index 2023, the largest survey of active travel in the UK and Ireland, found that 50% of residents would like to walk more and 43% would like to cycle more.
Joe McDermott, our project manager in Nottingham said:
“Our research nationally shows that more people want to walk, cycle or use a mobility aid as part of their journeys to work. But often they are put off because they don’t know where their local routes are, they are not confident about cycling on roads or maintaining their bikes.
“This programme will help to tackle those barriers and support Nottingham workplaces to help their teams make healthier, greener transport choices.
“We are grateful to Nottingham City Council for renewing the project so we can work closely with workplaces in Nottingham to make a positive impact to the health of individuals and the city as a whole.”
Councillor Neghat Khan, Nottingham City Council Leader and Executive Member for Strategic Regeneration, Transport and Communications, said:
“I'm pleased to see our Workplace Travel Service helping people to walk, cycle, or wheel to work. I urge local employers to join in and benefit from the free activities from Sustrans.
“Getting people out of their cars supports our vision of becoming a carbon neutral city by 2028.”
