National Cycle Network: How an unsung national treasure is transforming lives across the UK

The National Cycle Network gives people the freedom to move and explore, build up confidence, connect with nature and forge friendships. We're highlighting the importance and diversity of the Network and celebrating its impact on communities and individuals across the country.

In this new video, we're showcasing the inspirational stories which show the difference the National Cycle Network is making to lives across the UK.

This video is part of a campaign to celebrate the 12,000-mile strong network of routes for walking, wheeling and cycling.

It shines a light on the Network's vital role in giving people the freedom to move and explore, build up confidence, connect with nature and forge friendships.

Underpinning the campaign is the message that the Network is for everyone - and it’s not just for cycling – as we hope to inspire more people to seek it out.

People’s connections to the National Cycle Network

The video highlights the value of the National Cycle Network in providing accessible routes into nature, helping a PhD student explore her new home city, as a backdrop to a community cycling group, and as vital pathways for wellbeing walking groups.

We’ll share these personal stories over the coming months to demonstrate the importance of protecting and providing these routes for people across the country.

You know, without these paths, it would be difficult to do these walks.

‘Like a friend’

“It’s almost like the National Cycle Network is a friend in that it’s saying, ‘here come and explore in a comforting and safe way’,” says Veronica White, one of the five stars of the video.

The diverse Network, linking urban and rural communities across the UK, creates space to move in a safe and accessible way.
