The Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities has released the long-awaited Levelling Up White Paper.
The Levelling Up White Paper sets out the next stages in the programme to level up the UK.
The paper includes 12 UK-wide missions to anchor the agenda to 2030, alongside specific policy interventions.
Responding to the paper, Xavier Brice, CEO of cycling and walking charity Sustrans, said:
“The government is right to say that transport is a key factor in levelling-up the country and we welcome the recommitment to £2 billion for walking and cycling.
"Sustrans believes that the way we travel can create healthier places and happier lives for everyone.
“We also appreciate the intention to focus new housing around existing and planned transport infrastructure to create sustainable neighbourhoods that enable walking and cycling, supported by high quality local public transport.
“These intentions must now be delivered with changes to the planning system to ensure natural beauty is accessible for all and that everyone has the choice to live in a 20-minute neighbourhood where most of what people need is a short walk away.”
