In early 2025 Sustrans will launch the first ever Children’s Walking and Cycling Index, designed to understand the behaviours, barriers and attitudes affecting children’s cycling in the UK.

This report, sponsored by Halfords, follows on from the adult Walking and Cycling Index which has been in circulation for over 10 years.
It is designed to combat rising children’s obesity and mental health issues linked to isolation and lack of independence.
Recent national statistics suggest walking, wheeling and cycling to school have fallen since 2022, and Halfords and Sustrans hope to work in partnership to reverse these trends.
Children are often overlooked by decision-makers and officers in transport, or if they are considered, it's on the school journey.
This leaves out the role that travel plays in their day-to-day lives, supporting development of their independence, socialisation skills, overall mental health and wellbeing, and reducing the family workload.
Our new report will give a voice to children across the UK, reshaping how we approach children’s journeys with a focus on active travel.
We will release a report representing all UK children alongside a special Scotland edition.
Alongside the report, there will be case studies and videos helping to highlight many of the positives and barriers for children, including the differences between primary and secondary ages and between demographics, such as gender and income level.

This disconnect between children’s needs and the current state of transport systems is not just a matter of convenience, but of health, environmental sustainability, and the overall wellbeing of future generations.
To explore these findings further and develop strategies to improve the situation, we plan to also hold a Children’s Index Summit in early 2025.
The Children’s Walking and Cycling Index Summit will bring together key stakeholders, including industry leaders, policy experts, and decision- makers from both the public and private sectors.
This event aims to discuss the report’s findings and work together to create solutions for a transport system that prioritises walking, wheeling and cycling for children and young people across the UK.
By listening to children and designing transport systems that prioritise their needs, we can build communities that benefit everyone, today and in the future, creating a healthier, greener society for all ages.
