Sustrans Cymru has launched their 2021 Manifesto; Tomorrow’s Wales, for everyone. The launch took place at the Senedd and brought together decision-makers, partners and the public.
The manifesto for the Welsh Parliamentary Elections in 2021 includes 12 asks. It calls on all political parties to take bold action on the profound challenges that Wales faces, from climate change and air pollution to physical and mental health.
There is no silver bullet for these challenges. However, if these 12 asks were adopted it would ensure that tomorrow’s Wales is a place for everyone.
In the manifesto, Sustrans highlight 12 asks including a Sustainable Transport Bill, adopting 20 minute neighbourhoods within the planning system and ensuring that our communities are accessible for everyone.
Speaking at the event was Deputy Minister for Economy and Transport, Lee Waters AM. Also speaking was Chair of the Cross Party Group on the Active Travel Act, Huw Irranca-Davies.
Deputy Minister for Economy and Transport, Lee Waters Am said:
“For the first time ever, Welsh Government are spending more money on active travel than we are on roads. We’re spending £40 million pounds this financial year on active travel, this is a significant milestone.
“The people in this room need to make the case for Sustrans’ manifesto, this is a cross party agenda and it’s essential that it remains one in order to make active travel accessible to everyone.
“Welsh Government have already taken steps towards implementing 20mph speed limits and cracking down on pavement parking which signals a change of attitude and culture. That’s why the infrastructure intervention at Senghyenydd Road cycleway is a significant symbol.
“There’s a lot going on but there’s a lot more we need to do.”
Ellen Jones, Senior Policy Officer for Sustrans Cymru said:
“The next Welsh Parliamentary Election is going to be one of the most important in securing a tomorrow for our future generations.
"We need to see bold action in order to reduce inequalities in our society such as the effect that climate change, air pollution and transport poverty is having on our nation. Sustrans Cymru would like to see political parties adopt these twelve asks in order to create a better tomorrow, for everyone.”
