Sustrans Cymru welcome Welsh Government’s recommendations on Burns Commission

We warmly welcome Welsh Government’s decision to accept in principle all the recommendations of the South East Wales Transport Commission. This sustainable alternative to the M4 relief road sets a fantastic example of leadership and delivery against ambitions. We look forward to hearing how this evolves.

The Welsh Government has decided to accept the recommendations of the South East Wales Transport Commission, tasked to find sustainable alternatives for the M4 relief road.

This sets a fantastic example of leadership and delivery against ambitions.

The decision not to build the M4 relief road was a major step in the right direction.

But the decision to accept this alternative is a much more holistic approach to transport in and around Newport.

And it cements the commitment of the Welsh Government to create a network that is good for people, communities and the environment.

More sustainable future investment

We were especially pleased to see the Deputy Minister, Lee Waters, presenting the issue of congestion on the M4 as a “catalyst for broader change”.

This is setting the tone for much more sustainable investment in the next 20 years.

The decision to accept the recommendations of the Commission is the perfect showcase for this change in direction.

It moves away from the building of ever-growing road networks, and towards a network of sustainable integrated travel, helping people to leave their car at home.

Demonstrating bold leadership

We are very pleased to see the Welsh Government’s genuine commitment to this project and finding solutions by starting conversations early on and working in partnership.

We also welcome the cross-party support shown in the Siambr and hope this will translate into this project coming to fruition no matter the government make-up after May 2021.

We look forward to hearing how this evolves.

And we welcome the Welsh Government’s display of bold leadership which demonstrates that when political will is present, it is possible to achieve change.
