Bike It Plus London

Bike It Plus is a bespoke behaviour change programme for schools developed by Sustrans in partnership with Transport for London.

How it works

Through a holistic approach involving students, staff, parents and the wider school community, we tailor a programme of activities and support to suit a school’s needs, aiming to normalise riding a bike and to increase the number of pupils regularly cycling to school.

It runs throughout the academic year, beginning with a focus on awareness and empowerment, before moving on to action and embedding sustained behaviour change.

Outstanding results

In 2016 alone, our Bike It Plus team has worked with 73,500 pupils and 3,170 parents and staff across London. Our proven behaviour change project is great value for money and is currently delivered in 230 schools in London.

We’ve been hugely successful in increasing the number of pupils regularly cycling to school, with a year on year growth of over 6%. Enabling active travel through behavioural change, combined with collaborative street design principles for the school community, levels of everyday cycling have more than doubled, with an increase of 115% where we deliver the programme.

Funding the Bike It Plus programme is essential to us to help London’s kids be more active.

Bike It You Can Too

In addition, our supplementary Bike It You Can Too programme works with hard-to-reach individuals and families, teaching adults to ride, which often unlocks barriers to children riding by helping parents to become more confident on a bike.

As London’s cycling infrastructure develops, the pupils, parents and staff we’ve worked with are primed to pick up cycling for their everyday journeys, helping change travel behaviour for life.

What schools think

"We are hugely impressed that in 2016 Sustrans’ London schools programme increased the number of pupils who regularly cycle to school.

Their experience in leading tailored, fun programmes is proven to deliver long-lasting results. Funding the Bike It Plus programme is essential to us to help London’s kids be more active, safe and to lay the foundations to change the way they travel for life.” - Ross Butcher, TfL, Acting Programme Manager, Surface Transport.

The experience of working alongside Bike It Plus has been invaluable.

"The experience of working alongside Bike It Plus has been invaluable and I think without it would have been difficult to stay focused on encouraging the increase of cycling within our school community.” - School Champion at Forty Hill Primary School, Enfield.
