With funding from the Department for Transport, we've upgraded a previously damaged and weathered path, to create 1.7km of high-quality active travel route through National Trust’s Knightshayes estate.
National Cycle Network Route 3 runs through beuatiful greenery at the Knightshayes estate between Tiverton and Bampton.
We project managed the refurbishment of a poor-quality stretch of National Cycle Network Route 3, between Tiverton and Bampton.
The stretch begins near the National Trust walled gardens on the Knightshayes estate and runs northwards.
Previously the path surface was poor, damaged and weathered.
A barrier limited access to the route, and with hills on the route, there was nowhere to safely stop and rest.
What did we do on the route?
Paths for everyone
By improving the surface, removing a barrier and installing a place to stop and rest, we’ve created a route that can be used by a wider range of people.
A year-round route
The improvements to the surface and drainage mean that people can now enjoy the path in all weathers.
Increased biodiversity
We've planted trees, supported ecological maintenance schemes on site and installed bird, bat and dormice boxes nearby to help the surrounding wildlife.

The finer details
We worked with Bridge Civil Engineering Ltd to complete the construction project and GE Consulting to install the boxes for local wildlife.
The project was funded by the Department for Transport through our ongoing Paths for Everyone programme to enhance the National Cycle Network.
It is delivered with thanks to support from the National Trust and the Knightshayes estate.
