Walking and Cycling Index Data Tool

Explore the data using our interactive dashboards

Our Walking and Cycling Index dashboards allow you to explore and compare data in much more detail. They include:

  • data from 23 cities and regions across the United Kingdom and Ireland
  • different dashboards showing what people think, what people do, the impacts that has, and the infrastructure around them
  • demographic data to understand different groups
  • in many cases, comparison for every two years from 2019

What people think

Explore people's attitudes to walking, wheeling and cycling.

For example, you can find out what people think would make them cycle more, what they think of their local area, or where they would like to see government spending.

What people do

Explore people's walking, cycling and wheeling behaviours.

For example, you can find our how frequenctly people use different types of transport, what they cycle and walk for, or how many short journeys they make by car.

City data

In this dashboard, you can find a range of measures of the environment for walking, wheeling and cycling.

For example, you can find the percentage of households within walking distance of food shops, the total length of different types of cycle route, or the percentage of total street length covered by 20mph limits.

Trips data

In this dashboard, you can see estimates of the total amounts of walking or cycling being done, to destinations and for leisure of fitness.

For example, you can find estimated numbers of walking or cycling trips made yearly, and comparisons between cities relative to the sizes of their populations.

Benefits data

In this dashboard, you can see measures of the economic, health and environmental benefits of walking, wheeling and cycling.

For example, you can see estimates of the long-term health conditions avoided, and the greenhouse gas emissions averted through walking or cycling instead of driving. There are comparisons between cities relative to population size.

Accessing the Walking and Cycling Index data

The Walking and Cycling Index dashboards offer an interactive way to explore data but do not offer the option to download datasets.

If you would like to access the raw data from the Index surveys (anonymised survey responses) for in-depth analysis, please download and fill in our data request form and email it to Dene.Stevens@sustrans.org.uk.

Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and are not guaranteed.
